A freshly picked raspberry

Raspberries

This berry's distinct flavour can be enjoyed simply with cream. Raspberries can be quite tart and so compliment sweet desserts, and are an essential in summer pudding.

Raspberries come in such small containers in the supermarkets. Picking your own raspberries means you can stock up, for jam-making or freezing.

Raspberries are excellent for freezing as they hold their flavour and shape well after defrosting.

Varieties

 Finding your way around.
Leo Raspberry Information

The varieties that we grow on the farm have differing fruiting seasons, to ensure the fruit is available for as long as possible.

Moy (early) - a lovely start to the season.

Prosen (mid) - best when quite ripe.

Ample (mid) - a dark fruit, which usually befits its name.

Magna (late) - particularly popular with our customers who pick for the freezer.

Leo (late) - has a good flavour, best enjoyed before it is very ripe.

Top Tips

  • Unless you are picking for jam, we recommend small, shallow containers to ensure the raspberries don't squash.
  • A raspberry is ripe when you can pull the berry off of its 'plug' easily.
  • To ensure you can enjoy the best quality fruit, check out our advice on picking and storage.

Beneficial Insects

Ladybirds and other insects are beneficial for raspberry plants, so we hang plastic tubes the ends of some rows; these 'bug hotels' encourage them to stay in the area.
